New Year, New Venue - a look into why HOTEL ELEPHANT matters

Our first event of 2015 (10.01.15) will mark the move to a different London postcode and neighbourhood, after four terrific years at the heart of Shoreditch. As the effects of gentrification are slowly turning East London into a hub for high rents, redevelopment sites and generic music policy nights, we have seen the need to look out for other options and establish more meaningful, community-oriented connections.

We met Emily Woodhouse a few months ago and had a look at Hotel Elephant down in Elephant & Castle at the time when we were told that our last potential home, The New Empowering Church, was due to shut down and be turned into luxury flats in January 2015. We connected instantly with Emily and with the venue and decided to give it a go in what its also the living postcode of choice for many of our regulars; SE1.

Hotel Elephant is a gallery, studio and project space dedicated to supporting and enriching the cultural life of London's Elephant & Castle, as well as supporting local artists and communities, Hotel Elephant works with local authorities to caretake empty spaces.

As concrete towers raise over the shadows of Elephant & Castle's iconic roundabout, we know prime estate and money means we will not be here forever, but we want to support and enjoy this place while we can.

Know, when you come over to our next party, that what you are spending at the bar is not going towards a corporate venue's profit but to a community project.

We can't wait to host our party!
